A 57-year-old brain-dead patient with a breathing aid received a gene-modified pig kidney. According to NYU Langone Health, it is functioning for 32 days. It’s the longest pig kidney functioning. The pig kidney that was transplanted before by Alabama University only functioned for one week. Both Alabama University and NYU used gene-modified pig kidneys, but while Alabama used a kidney with ten genes changed, NYU only changed one gene. NYU is currently discussing having an experiment where they transplant a pig kidney to other patients, not only brain-dead patients.
