Recently in South Korea, the huge fall of the teacher’s authority is becoming a serious problem. As the importance of students’ rights keeps increasing, the teacher’s authority is dropping at a serious level. Teachers are supposed to teach students the way of being ethical individuals in society. However, due to society’s rebuke about using physical punishment or saying any words that might hurt the student’s feelings, teachers are struggling to stop students from acting erroneously. An example that proves that the teacher’s authority dropped happened last year in a middle school located in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. During a lecture, a student laid down in front of the class, off task, charging his phone. However, the teacher was unable to take any action. Another example recently has been an issue in social media. During class time in a school located in Wonju-si, a student ate ramen noodles showing off his gangster tattoos. The teacher was unable to stop the student and the whole class had to be interrupted by the delinquent student. Recently, a young teacher committed suicide in an elementary school. It was known that the aforementioned teacher was researching a school bullying case. Her colleagues predict that she was over-stressed due to the bullying case. People on social media point out that the fall of teachers’ authority makes it hard for teachers to extinguish the bullying problem and control the students. People also point out that not only the student’s rights are important, but the teacher’s rights to teach the students are also as important.
