The norovirus is currently surging in South Korea, with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reporting a staggering 360 cases from January 7 to 13, marking the highest weekly incidence in the past five years. Notably, nearly half of the patients fall within the age group of 0-6, displaying weakened immune systems, while those aged 7-18 constitute 18.9%, warranting particular attention. As the nation braces for an anticipated spike in cases during Seollal (Korean New Year's Day), emergency quarantine systems have been activated across various regions.

Amid the frigid winter conditions, the virus is spreading, predominantly through the consumption of raw food, which, owing to its resilient nature, does not spoil easily. Notably, the norovirus exhibits remarkable survivability, enduring temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius and remaining active even in tap water. Unfortunately, no vaccine or specific treatment is available, and transmission can occur through contact with an infected person's droplets, vomit, or feces.

The symptoms associated with norovirus encompass headache, muscle pain, fever, chills, and diarrhea, potentially leading to dehydration. In mitigating the impact, the recommendation is to replenish fluids with sports drinks. To proactively prevent infection, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency underscores the importance of frequent handwashing, the closure of toilet lids before flushing, and meticulous attention to ensuring food is thoroughly cooked. As the nation grapples with this public health challenge, vigilance and adherence to preventive measures are of utmost importance.
