NewJeans (NJZ) has announced a temporary suspension of their activities.
Since last year, NewJeans has been engaged in a legal battle with their agency, ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE’s K-pop label, over issues related to contract fulfillment and termination. The group claimed that ADOR had violated the terms stated in their exclusive contract, and on February 7, they declared their intention to operate independently under the name NJZ. They also announced plans to debut as headliners at ComplexCon in Hong Kong on March 23, where they intended to release new music.
However, ADOR had filed for an injunction to prevent NewJeans from engaging in independent activities, and on March 21, the court ruled in ADOR’s favor. This decision created legal complications for the group’s activities. The ruling restricts NJZ from conducting independent activities such as concerts and advertisements without ADOR's approval. Until they win the main lawsuit, any activity without ADOR's consent is legally prohibited.
Following their performance at ComplexCon on March 23, NewJeans publicly announced that, in accordance with the court’s decision, their activities would be temporarily halted. They stated that while they would comply with the ruling, they would not stop speaking out in order to protect themselves. Member Hyein added, "Some people might think it would have been better for us to just endure and stay with ADOR. But for us, this was about protecting ourselves. We believe that by doing so, we can become stronger and return again. That’s why we do not regret our decision."
