Set in the 1950s, Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born follows the dreams and challenges of women pursuing careers in Korea’s traditional women’s theater. The lead character Jeongnyeon, played by Kim Tae-ri, delivers a compelling performance, immersing audiences in the character’s journey. Alongside Kim, Shin Hye-sun and Kim Yoo-jung add depth with their distinctive characters, enriching the drama’s unique appeal. By introducing viewers to the lesser-known world of women’s theater, the drama combines captivating music, dance, and striking visuals, leaving a fresh impression on audiences worldwide.
Cultural critic Kim Heon-sik attributes Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born's global appeal to its similarities with musicals, blending acting, dance, and song, which lowers cultural barriers. He notes, “Elements like gender fluidity and modern themes enhance accessibility, while the story, set in a uniquely Korean time period, resonates by highlighting friendship, growth, and competition among women. This universal theme has built a bridge of empathy across borders.” As Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born opens doors to diverse Korean storytelling, it also expands the global potential of K-content.
