Japan has initiated the release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant as planned. On October 20, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) started releasing the third installment of this series into the sea, approximately 7,800 tons of diluted radioactively polluted water. Over the course of the following 17 days, this discharge will continue, releasing a total of 7,800 tons of contaminated water.

The area surrounding the nuclear power plant is closely monitored by Japanese officials, who have stressed their alertness. Every day, TEPCO measures the amount of tritium present in seawater. Seawater and seafood are being tested by environmental and fisheries organizations, and the results show levels that are well below national norms. Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to release a total of 31,200 tons of contaminated water in four stages by March next year. It is estimated that it will take about 30 years for the entire discharge process to be completed
