Africa's Rising Influence: Implications for Global Geopolitics and Superpower Rivalry

21 September 2023

By Minseo Kim

Africa is receiving attention from various parts of the international community, joining the ranks of member countries at the G20 summit held in New Delhi on September 9th. This makes it the second group member after the European Union. The African Union (AU) recently became a member of the G20, and the United States and China seek to have close relations with Africa.

Recently holding a summit and advocating for the introduction of a global carbon tax that is proportional to greenhouse gas emissions, it called on developed countries to take significant responsibility for the climate crisis, given their higher emissions. Also, many African countries along with India and Brazil are considered emerging countries in the Global South with abundant population and resources. That is, economic influence in Africa is also increasing with companies increasing investments in the continent.

As Africa's influence grows, chances are that Africa will play a central role in the world's geopolitical stage: China has recently lent money to Africa and helped build various facilities through individual projects. African countries indebted to China tend to support China in international debates on issues like human rights. Whereas The United States criticizes China for essentially turning Africa into a debt trap through its projects, akin to creating colonies. To win Africa's favor, the U.S. has been making efforts to support a total of 72 trillion won (Korean currency) in aid to Africa over three years.
